Meridional motions of sunspots observed at Meudon were investigated for the period 1977-1984. A complex time and latitude-dependent meridional circulation was found, though the signal remains hardly above the 2σ level, when data are averaged over the full solar cycle. The latitudinal transport of linear angular momentum by sunspots was also estimated. The main results are that meridional motions share in the modulation of the differential rotation amplitude through the 11 -y cycle, the horizontal momentum transport, via Reynolds stresses, seems to be absent. These findings shed doubt on the origin of the differential rotation.
