Solar Corona: Heating, Solar Corona: Plasma Diagnostics

Scientific paper

One of the most important problems in plasma astrophysics is to explain how the outer atmosphere of the Sun, the corona, is heated to temperature of millions of degrees Kelvin. A new anomalous dissipation mechanism of magnetic energy, transit-time dissipation mechanism of magnetic energy, transit-time dissipation across magnetically modified Langmuir solitons is proposed for the first time. This mechanism predicts that the thinner and hotter a plasma, the more difficient the magnetic energy dissipation, which naturally explains why the outer atmosphere is hotter and why there exists the chromosphere-transition layer.
