The March 8 2011 (UT 03:40) solar eruption carried flux rope feature as captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) telescope most evidently at 17.1 nm. The brightness data at 9.4 nm suggested that the brightness fluctuation statistics (using the brightness increment analysis across the region) would increase just before the flux rope eruption, consistent with the formation of a flux rope structure building towards the threshold for energy release as coronal mass ejection. Spatial position sensitive statistics such as volatility, coefficient of variation, etc. have been used to probe the brightness fluctuation. The brightness increment data series along a solar disk direction for fluctuation statistical analysis shows that the CV (coefficient of variation) would have a temporal peak prior to the flux rope eruption. Larger CV values would suggest larger fluctuations. This CV temporal peak could serve as a forecast parameter for flux rope formation-eruption and subsequent coronal mass ejection eruption. Such brightness fluctuation in the transverse direction perpendicular to the rope eruption could be indicative of turbulence from instability. The interpretation of the fluctuation analysis result in terms of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is discussed. Whether this flux rope structure is a general feature for all coronal mass eruptions would require further analysis. The project is supported by NASA award NNX10AE72G and NSF ATM-0851932 and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).
