The Haas Center for Public Service, the Stanford Solar Center, the Space Sciences Institute, and NASA have joined in a pioneering collaboration to develop a Science Service Learning Program, being prototyped at Stanford. Our plan is to train and prepare undergraduates from many fields to engage in public service projects that communicate science and the excitement of scientific discovery to K-14 students and people of all ages. Ultimately, we hope to motivate and cultivate advocacy of science and good science education among future professionals and leaders in multiple disciplines. The program includes a 1-quarter undergraduate course where students are taught effective techniques for communicating science. Using solar astronomy as the theme, students will learn basic concepts directly from solar science researchers, and be mentored on how to apply this knowledge to outreach efforts. Selected graduates of the course will become Public Service Science Fellows and participate directly in educational outreach efforts to the community under plans that they have designed themselves. Not only will our program provide a leveraged outreach effort to under-served communities, but we hope to develop a cadre of professionals who feel that science education and public service are part of a lifetime commitment.
