During the last 6 years, the XMM-Newton observatory has discovered thousands of new X-ray sources. This large collection of sources allows new insight on many high energy astrophysical fields. Thanks to its large field of view and sensitivity XMM-Newton carries out a deep survey of the galaxy. We are currently conducting a dedicated identification campaign of X-ray active stars in various galactic directions. Comparing the distribution of the properties of identified active coronae with the predictions of the Besançon stellar X-ray population model allows to constrain the fundamental parameters of young stars. The number of coronal sources drastically varies with galactic latitude. A variation with galactic longitude is also predicted at medium flux. High and medium galactic latitudes observed Log N - Log S curves are in very good agreement with model expectations. Finally, we compare model predictions with observations in a very low galactic latitude XMM-Newton field displaying a significantly lower source density than on the average. We show that in this field Log N - Log S curves can be explained by the presence of nearby large absorption.
