The soft X-ray `colours' of 59 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) (Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars) have been determined from the ROSAT PSPC data. It has been shown, in a model-independent manner, that the soft X-ray spectrum, from ~0.1 keV to ~1.0 keV, of this heterogeneous sample of AGNs can be described by an absorbed power law. The photon index of the power law is between 2 and 3, and for most of these AGNs the absorption is entirely the result of the cold Galactic gas. There is evidence of an absorption feature (most probably an O viii edge at 0.871 keV) in the spectra of ~7 per cent of these higher luminosity AGNs. This is in marked contrast to the high incidence of this feature in the spectra of lower luminosity AGNs. There is no statistically significant correlation between the soft X-ray colours and the radio properties of these AGNs. These data do not suggest that the X-ray emission, in the 1.0 keV to 2.5 keV region, is boosted in radio-loud AGNs.quasars: general - galaxies: Seyfert - X-rays: general.
