The accomplishments of the SMASS I and II studies, which obtained
spectra in the visible for a substantial number of small asteroids in
the inner main belt, are summarized and questions left unanswered by the
studies are pointed out. Plans for the SMASSIR program to make NIR
observations of small main-belt and near-Earth asteroids are addressed.
