The aerodynamic drag and structural heating of rockets for research are discussed in the context of the requirements for conductive surfaces and avoidance of outgassing. Drag curves are presented which are basically applicable to any rocket with any number of stages. Economic advantages in the use of small rockets are emphasized and illustrated by examples. Efficiency curves for sounding rockets as a function of stage size distribution are given. Available motors for multistage rockets are reviewed.
