A brief review of the existing data on the problem of the observed transition between small and planetary bodies is presented. It is shown that the boundary of this transition is determined by the fundamental strength of the material of the small bodies. An accurate quantitative theory for this phenomenon is considered, which agrees well with the observed and experimental data. Stringent limits on the value of the yield stress have been found for the first time for an actual composition of icy solar system bodies at low temperatures, and accordingly, on the value of the critical mass for this class of objects.
