Measurements of the virtual height of radio waves reflected from the ionosphere are presented and analyzed. As previously described by the authors (1977), these measurements can be obtained using an ionosonde in two different ways: a form of pulse synthesis in which the ionosonde is swept in frequency and the virtual height is determined by taking the Fourier transform of the phase measurements at a number of frequencies; and an approach in which the ionosonde is repeatedly stepped through 20 frequencies in 0.4 sec, allowing detailed time variations and height structure to be measured. Data obtained by these techniques show that small-amplitude (less than 500 m peak to peak), short-period (less than 10 sec) waves can occur in the E and F regions of the ionosphere. These may be due to sound waves or to plasma instabilities.
