As part of testing and commissioning, The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) obtained imaging and spectroscopic data of parts of the sky outside its high-latitude footprint, including star-forming regions in Orion, Taurus and Cygnus. The Taurus data consist of a pair of short imaging stripes covering some 48 square degrees with about 10 square degrees of overlap, and 6400 spectra, mostly of reddened, low mass and pre-main-sequence stars. These data are being used for several studies of star formation in the Taurus Dark Cloud, including: searches for new T Tau and Herbig Ae/Be stars: measurements of the extinction in eight bands (together with 2MASS); a survey of HH objects and YSOs across the face of the cloud; the measurement of the distribution of diffuse ionized gas; and comparison with Spitzer surveys of pre-main-sequence objects. The imaging data have photometry accurate to 2% in the SDSS u and z filters, and better than 1% in the g, r, and i filters, with positions accurate to 40 mas. The spectra have a resolution of about 2000 and cover 3800 to 9200 Angstroms. The data are fully reduced and calibrated, openly available at http://photo.astro.princeton.edu, and are described by Finkbeiner et al. (AJ 128, 2577, 2004).
