This year the Sloan Digital Sky Survey will begin spectroscopic observations which will produce 1 million galaxy spectra and over 100,000 QSO spectra over the next five years. To efficiently handle this large database, we not only require automated reduction of the spectra, but automated classification and redshift identification. In this talk, we will present highlights of both the reduction and analysis of galaxy and QSO spectra. We will show the robustness of the pipeline by presenting the first images obtained with the SDSS telescope/spectrograph system. Using these data to characterize the spectroscopic system, we can use these first tests to provide a glimpse of the upcoming survey quality spectra of the SDSS.
