The author's purpose is to try to illustrate the advantages of a strict adherence to the axiom of locality in situating the tradition of Arabic science with reference both to the place that this tradition occupies in the general history of science and to its place in the civilization where it emerged and developed. The discussion will thus be concerned with two contexts that, though distinct from one another, are, as he suggests, intimately connected with each other.
