Pb isotope analyses were conducted on 42 zircon grains from a Western Australian metaconglomerate using stepwise Pb-evaporation directly in the ion source of a thermal ionization mass spectrometer. Ion microprobe analyses show that the metaconglomerate contains a complex zircon population with ages between 4.2 Ga and 3.1 Ga. The Pb-evaporation analyses showed five grains to have ages from 4.17 to 4.07 Ga. The main populations is shown to have been generated at about 3.55-3.3 Ga. The results confirm zircon ages about 4 Ga in the metaconglomerate from the Jack Hills and suggest crust formation at a very early stage in the earth's evolution.
