A series of spectrograms have been obtained for the T Tau star RW Aur. The three most characteristic spectra, corresponding to different levels of brightness, are described. At maximum light the envelope absorption-line spectrum strengthens and a type G photospheric spectrum develops. The Balmer-line profiles undergo substantial systematic changes with passage from hydrogen-alpha to the higher Balmer terms. Some lines display YY Ori-type profiles. The conditions under which the emission-line spectrum is formed are discussed briefly.
