It has been hypothesized that there exist spiral galaxies, called 'three-dimensional galaxies', whose arms are extended at some angle outside the equatorial plane. Moreover, various forms of appearance of barred spirals can be attributed to the fact that one is observing a three-dimensional galaxy from different aspect angles. A copper mechanical model was used to simulate this visual effect. Infrared photographs of the model heated up to 170 C and taken at various angles could be associated with the familiar barred spiral appearance forms. A computerized version of the model was also set up, with which geometric parameters could be more easily varied.
