Using very large scale hybrid plasma simulations of parallel shocks, we have studied the acceleration of ions to high energies. The energetic particle component of the (self-consistent) distribution function is effectively modelled by utilizing the technique of particle splitting, which has been used successfully in Monte Carlo simulations, and also by introducing a source of upstream turbulence which acts to efficiently isotropize the ions backstreaming from the shock.
