A simple model is described, derived from Parker's (1969) dynamo theory. The field source consists of N interacting point dipoles, characterized by a finite lifetime. A Monte Carlo process gives the temporal evolution for the system. When the number of dipoles is of the order of the elementary cells present in Parker's theory, for a wide range of coupling parameters between the dipoles the thermodynamic fluctuations may generate excursions and polarity reversals, whose morphology and temporal distribution may be compared with those observed for the geomagnetic field.
