We investigate the effect of newly-formed stars on the shape of the IMF using a simplified energy rate balance calculation which includes dust heating, molecular cooling, and cosmic ray heating. When young stars form and heat the surrounding dust, the gas is also heated due to the collisional coupling of the gas to the dust at high densities. As the density decreases, the gas is able to cool through molecular transitions. At very low densities, the gas is heated by cosmic rays. As the young stars heat the surrounding gas, they change the local Jeans mass, which in turn affects the mass of stars that form subsequently. We compare the IMF from simulations with similar initial conditions but different treatments of the heating of the gas. We acknowledge the support of NASA's Graduate Student Researchers Program.
