Silicon has been determined in 107 chondrites and 11 achondrites by fast neutron activation analysis. The technique is essentially non-destructive and rapid, less than ten minutes being required for a single analysis. The precision of the silicon determinations, based on four separate analyses of each meteorite, is better than ± 3 per cent in most cases and the absolute accuracy for the silicon values listed is probably better than ± 5 per cent for most of the determinations. In addition, a classification scheme for the stony meteorites based on chemical composition is given.
