Mass threshold values are tabulated for impact speeds governing the sensitivity of the impact plasma detector used on the HEOS 2 satellite. The importance of careful selection of the probe orbit with respect to the target comet orbit is emphasized. Detector results are distinguished for probe-comet distances of less than or more than a million km, with acceleration of dust particles by the outstreaming gas and partial or complete evaporation of ice particles by solar radiation assumed for the latter case. A minimum fly-by speed 1 km/sec is specified.
