The scientific mission of the Hipparcos/Tycho mission were carried out by means of a special optical telescope in geostationary orbit to measure the position, the eigen motions and the trigonometric parallaxes and the luminosity of a lot of stars. To obtain the position of the stars, the angle between two distant stars is measured. Since around 100,000 stars are listed in the Hipparcos input catalog, a lot of stars can be recorded.
