Design features and performance specifications of the SIGMA space observatory for detecting stellar sources of high energy (30 keV-2 MeV) gamma ray events are described. The system is proposed for launch on board the Ariane 4 vehicle in 1985 into a quasi-equatorial orbit of 185/35,000 km with a 7 deg inclination. The instrument is intended to cover 10-100 arcmin with a sensitivity of 1/100,000 photons/sq cm, per second, per keV, with 24 hr scans. The total field is projected as being 7 x 7 deg. The principle of a coded aperture mask telescope is used, with a screen code of 82 x 86 elements. The arrangement follows patterns defined by the method of twin prime numbers generating pseudo-random sequences. Position coding takes place with an Anger camera. The payload total will be 800 kg, will have a sun pointing system, solar panels, and will possess on-board storage capability for data transmission to earth at a 2 kbit/sec rate.
