Time resolved, absolutely calibrated spectra for transitions between the n = 3 levels in Si IV have been measured from both TEXT tokamak and TMX-U mirror device. In both plasmas, the electron density (ne) and temperature (Te) were measured independently by non-spectroscopic methods, the Si IV ions being located in regions with ne ≡ 1011 - 1012cm-3 and Te ≡ 5 - 20 eV. The experimental line ratios are in good agreement with theoretical predictions, providing evidence that the discrepancies between previous computations and solar observations were most probably due to the blending of the observed lines. Consequently, these transitions can be used for electron temperature diagnostics in astrophysical or laboratory plasmas.
