Equatorial ionospheric electrodynamic processes are highly variable in time scales from a few minutes to several years. Over the last decade, extensive ground-based and satellite measurements have been used to derive season, solar cycle, magnetic activity, and longitude dependent climatological models of equatorial plasma drifts and spread F. These models have been widely used for low latitude ionospheric studies. The occurrence of large oscillations with periods from 2 to about 16 days in the intensity of the equatorial electrojet during geomagnetic quiet times has been known for several years. On the other hand, there is currently very little information on the seasonal dependence and magnitude of multi-day oscillations in the equatorial plasma drifts and, especially, on their possible effects on the short term variability of equatorial spread F and scintillations. We use Jicamarca incoherent scatter radar, JULIA, and ROCSAT-1 satellite observations to study the multi-day variability of equatorial vertical plasma drifts. We focus initially on lunar semi-diurnal tidal perturbations which have particularly large amplitudes between November and March and strong season dependent phase shifts near dawn and dusk, as well as on two-day oscillations. We also use JULIA measurements to examine the short term variability of equatorial spread F and discuss its relationship to the variability of the vertical plasma drifts.
