The detection of a multifrequency in rapid variations of the equivalent width and profile of He I 6678 is reported. Strong bumps (not greater than 1.5 percent of the continuum) moving from blue to red through the line profile were observed. EW Lac is the first Be star for which very good agreement exists between frequencies previously discovered from photometric variations and those displayed in spectroscopic data. The three common frequencies (2.75, 1.60, and 1.25 c/d) are interpreted in terms of nonradial pulsations and are associated with retrograde sectorial modes l = m = 6, 4, and 2, respectively. A fourth frequency (0.45 c/d), only detected in spectroscopy, could be caused by the rotation of inhomogeneities located near the base of the stellar envelope. EW Lac appears to be a very good candidate for multisite photometric and spectroscopic campaigns to study the role of nonradial pulsations in connection with mass loss in Be stars.
