The IUE satellite has been used to search for modulation in the ultraviolet flux from the class of galactic objects known as binary X-ray pulsars, over timescales comparable to the known pulse periods. This has entailed developing a means of using the IUE for "pulse phased spectroscopy" with a resolution of ≡1/10th of the pulse period. The technique is described, and the results of observations of the pulsars Vela X-1, 4U 1145-619 and A 0535+26 are discussed. New results regarding long-suspected residual sensitivity variations in the IUE SWP camera response perpendicular to dispersion are presented, together with an empirically-derived error-estimation curve for line-by-line spectra.
