Results are reported for an analysis of experimental data on short-period cosmic-ray variations observed during 11 Forbush decreases. A comparison of computed and observed Forbush-decrease profiles shows that piston shock waves were responsible for the observed two-stage Forbush-decrease profiles and that shock-front structure must be taken into account when interpreting the profiles. The frequency spectrum of the short-period cosmic-ray variations is examined. It is concluded that the specific dynamics of these variations was caused by small-scale interplanetary-magnetic-field inhomogeneities ahead of the relevant shock fronts and decreased interplanetary-magnetic-field irregularity behind the fronts.
