The APS, in partnership with the AAPT and the AIP, initiated a project to dramatically improve the science preparation of physics, physical science, and elementary teachers, nation-wide. It will increase the role of physics departments, in collaboration with education departments, to create more and better-prepared future teachers. The Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PhysTEC) begins with an initial set of six universities that share a commitment to improve their teacher preparation programs. One, the UA, is a state university with about 15,000 students. The Physics Department has 15 faculty, with about 80 undergraduates and 40 graduate students. Features of the undergraduate program that will benefit future teachers, as well as planned curricular revisions, cooperative efforts with the College of Education, and contributions of a high school Teacher In Residence will be discussed.
