A description of the ultracentrifuge gravitational red-shift experiment is given. The experiment attempts to simulate the cosmological gravitational red shift, resulting from a relatively small gravitational field operating over relatively long distances, by an effective gravitational field of 10 to the 6th g produced in the ultracentrifuge operating on laser light for short distances. Definitive results from the experiment were not achieved, nor was a transverse Doppler effect detected. The present paper sets forth the reasons for these problems and calculates the experimental conditions that would be necessary to overcome them.
