Geomagnetic Field: Variations

Scientific paper

The variations of the geomagnetic field strength F with 2 ≤ T ≤ 10 yrs are separated into global and local parts for observatories of eastern and southeastern Asia. The global part of these variations is produced by the DR and DCF magnetospheric current system. It is shown that it is sufficient when describing its variation in space, including in a given region, to take account of only the first zonal harmonics of the spherical harmonic series for the X and Z components. However, these variations also occur in the Y component where their phase changes to the opposite value going from Europe to the Pacific Ocean. Numerical estimates are given of the magnitude of the local part in linear components of F. It has been assumed that the local part is produced mainly by recording errors.
