A trajectory-tracing method was used to calculate cosmic ray vertical cutoff rigidities for 66 regions on a world-wide grid in a number of different epochs. The purpose of the calculations was to locate the cosmic ray equator for a fine grid in the equatorial regions. Comparison of the vertical cutoff rigidities of the International Geomagnetic Reference model for 1980 (IGRF-80) with previous reference field models showed systematic differences in values for the Atlantic Ocean and South America which were greater than those in previous models. It is shown that the cutoff rigidity values of the IGRF-80 model are in better agreement with data from cosmic ray latitude surveys of the Atlantic Ocean region. Changes in the location of the cosmic ray equator appear to be asymmetrical: no changes were found in the Asian Pacific region; but significant changes were identified in the positions of the cosmic ray equator in the South American, Atlantic Ocean and West African regions. IGRF-80 cutoff rigidity values for points on the arrival trajectory of a satellite in orbit around the earth are also compared with calculations from the interim field model of 1980, and some differences are discussed.
