We have calculated the magnetic field everywhere in the magnetotail assuming the magnetotail to be a cylinder of constant radius with a sheet of current bisecting its center; the current magnitude and spatial dependence are a best fit to present satellite observations. We have then computed particle motions in this calculated field. We have found that these computed particle motions yield electrical currents which closely approximate the initial assumed current source of the magnetic field. These computed currents furnish an excellent basis for a second cycle of field, particle motion, and current computation for a rapidly convergent self-consistent calculation. The magnetic field at the center of the neutral sheet (including the planetary dipole field) is perpendicular to the current sheet, relatively small (~1-2 gamma), unidirectional, and monotonically decreasing with distance from the planet permitting no X-type field configuration as required for field annihilation or reconnection.
