We reconsider the problem of spherical accretion onto strongly magnetized compact objects and derive, using ideal MHD, a second order differential equation for the selfconsistent magnetic field structure. Classifying this equation as partly hyperbolic and partly elliptic, we discuss the different region of subsonic, supersonic, superalfvénic and subalfvénic accretion flow.
