Ancient astronomical records can shed light on the nontidal term which appears to be accelerating the earth's rotation. After detailed consideration of the accuracy of the 'time window' methodology employed, 732 records of lunar occultations and approaches from Chinese archives dating from the 3rd to the 7th centuries A.D. are used to study the earth's rotation. The mean acceleration omega thus obtained is consistent with other sources. Attention is given to an apparent change which occurred in the fifth century.
