Earth'S Rotation-Ancient Astronomical Records-Lunar Occultation
Scientific paper
We have developed a ``time window'' (actually visible time segment) method to utilize ancient Chinese untimed records of lunar occultations in a study of the secular changes in the Earth's rotation. A comprehensive statistical analysis was carried out on ancient Chinese records of lunar occultations and close approaches. On this basis, we made an analysis of the Earth's rotation using 732 such records before the Five Dynasties. This work fills the weak link between the 3rd and the 7th Century in our run of data and the mean value of Earth's acceleration we found is in good agreement with the results found by previous authors. The results obtained by dividing the period into separate intervals join well with what went before and after and show that a clear change took place in the 5th Century. Using 240 lunar records of the Yuan Dynasty, it is shown that the ``time window'' method is free of obvious systematic errors.
