The planet-disc interaction is one means by which extrasolar planets may have acquired orbital eccentricity. Recent numerical simulations by various groups have indicated that the eccentricity of a gap-opening planet or that of the surrounding disc can grow under certain conditions. The analysis of these systems involves a treatment of secular and resonant interactions between the planet and the disc together with an understanding of the propagation and dissipation of eccentricity within the disc. Analogous problems exist for inclination and were described in previous work. A novel treatment of the irreversible consequences of mean-motion resonances in a dissipative disc is required when both the planet and the disc have eccentricity. The behaviour of eccentricity is also significantly different in two- and three-dimensional models of discs.
