The geoid anomalies in the Macquarie Ridge complex between New Zealand and the Pacific-Antarctic spreading center are analyzed, on the basis of Seasat altimeter observations. It is found that the geoid anomalies of the Hjort trench region of the Ridge appear to be characterized by subduction activity near the Aleutian-Komandorski Islands. Limited first-motion data for the large 1924 earthquake in the northern Hjort trench suggest a thrust focal mechanism. On the basis of the geological analysis, it is concluded that younger regions of the oceanic lithosphere can subduct under older regions.
