The MACRO (Monopole, Astrophysics, and Cosmic Ray Observatory) detector is a large underground cosmic ray observatory located at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. The capabilities of MACRO are described and the sensitivity of the detector for gravitational collapse observation is calculated. For the models of stellar collapse considered, MACRO is expected to detect between 117 and 150 events for an event from a distance of 10 kpc. Gravitational collapse search with MACRO is sensitive to the entire Galaxy because of the relatively low background rate and large number of expected events. Six months of MACRO data have been analyzed and no supernova candidate was found. When this analysis is combined with a previously published MACRO gravitational collapse search, the rate of core collapse in the Galaxy is limited to less than 1.35 per year with 90% confidence based on no observations in an effective live time of 1.7 years. This upper limit can be reduced to 0.23 per year if no supernovae are detected in 10 years of detector live time, but this is still well above the rate of Galactic supernova expected by theory. Based on predicted Galactic supernova rates, the probability of MACRO observing a gravitational collapse in the next 5 years is between 9% and 39%. Observation of a neutrino burst in MACRO will provide important new data that can be used to test and modify gravitational collapse theories and may provide important information about neutrino mass and oscillation properties.
