We request 2 nights using the MOSAIC imager at either Kitt Peak or CTIO to perform a wide-field search for Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) associated with z~3 Damped Lyαabsorbers (DLAs). Because DLAs appear to be the progenitors of typical present-day galaxies, the mass and environment of high redshift DLAs have important implications for galaxies like the Milky Way. DLAs are detected via absorption in the line-of-sight to quasars and offer the best environment to study the detailed properties of protogalaxies at high redshift. Galaxy formation models based on CDM cosmology predict DLAs to lie in halos of sufficient mass (~10^11 M_&sun;) to show significant clustering with LBGs. We will test these models by gathering a sufficient sample of LBGs and DLAs at z~3 to determine the DLA-LBG cross-correlation. Measuring the amplitude of the spatial correlation between DLAs and LBGs will reveal the bias and therefore information on the typical mass of DLAs at high redshift. We will discern LBGs candidates from low redshift objects by applying Lyman break photometric color selection and confirm redshifts by performing follow-up multi-slit spectroscopy using DEIMOS at Keck. This wide-field search will detect ~600 LBGs (R< 25.5) and ~20 new DLAs foreground to quasars and bright LBGs discovered in the field. From the deep imaging necessary to carry out this program, we should be able to detect emission from ~20% of the DLAs with R<=25 allowing us to establish an upper limit on the DLA luminosity function. This science cannot be done efficiently with any other telescope/instrument configuration.
