Current models of outer gap emission from strongly magnetized neutron stars predict, in some realizations, a detectable GeV emission from magnetars. We will report on the search for gamma-ray emission from all known magnetars using the Fermi Large Area Telescope, the most sensitive instrument to date in the 0.1-10 GeV energy range. This study imposes tight constraints on the efficiency of the outer gap in strongly magnetized pulsars, as well as advancing us one step further towards the understanding of these puzzling and extreme sources.
