We describe how we investigate the constraints on the gamma-ray burst (GRB) flux-red shift relationship in the cosmological scenario. Using the burst duration as a standard time-scale, and the burst peak flux as a standard candle, the absolute values of the red shifts of any two bursts can be determined. Using multiple pairings of bursts, a statistical distribution of the red shift of any individual burst can be produced, the properties of which are determined entirely by the properties of the intrinsic duration distribution and luminosity distribution. We apply the method to bursts in the 3B catalog, and find the non-physical result of the brightest bursts having medians near (1+z)=1.0, and 1+z decreasing with decreasing burst flux, which appears to be due to the broad log-normal distribution of the observed duration distribution.
