Earth Rotation: Tidal Effects

Scientific paper

Computations of the secular slowing of the rate of the Earth's rotation by sea tides were made. It is shown that the observed increase in length of day can be attributed to the braking effect of sea tides. The tidal forces of the Moon and Sun, acting on sea tides, also generate an appreciable secular moment relative to the axis lying in the plane of the Earth's equator.
