The SDSS-III MARVELS planet search aims to provide: (a) the largest homogeneous single radial velocity (RV) survey dataset with moderate- high Doppler precision (5-30 m/s for 11,000 V=7.6-12 FGK stars); (b), over 150 new giant planets orbiting FGK dwarfs, subgiants, and giants over a wide range of masses (~0.8-5M_&sun;); and (c) a sample of rare planets and brown dwarfs. This proposal requests KPNO 2.1m telescope time with the EXPERT instrument, to follow up 30 short and intermediate period planet and brown dwarf candidates identified from MARVELS data in order to confirm and characterize the orbits. The well- characterized giant planets from these and future follow-ups will yield the largest statistically homogeneous sample of massive exoplanets, which will be used to measure demographics of giant planet populations among host stars with a range of masses and chemical compositions. These demographics will in turn provide important constraints on theories of planet formation and migration. In addition, we will characterize rare systems such as brown dwarfs and look for additional planets around confirmed MARVELS planetary systems to study the architecture and dynamical evolution of planetary systems. Characterized brown dwarfs will be used to address the dryness of the well-known brown dwarf desert.
