MERIS products include geophysical parameters and related flags, which are logical (yes-no) values indicating a certain property of the geophysical values. The internal format of the MERIS Level 2 product is very complex in order to store the 30 geophysical parameters and 29 flags. However, the decoding is automatically performed if the BEAM software is used. Classification flags specify if a pixel belongs to either a water, land or cloud class. Depending on this, different geo- physical parameter and flags are included in the product. Product Confidence flags exist for every geophysical parame- ter. If raised, the corresponding geophysical parameter of that pixel should not be used. Science flags indicate special properties of a pixel, which may lead to specific processing branches or indicate specific characteristics of a pixel. The Product Confidence Flags (PCD) are very important, since the corresponding geophysical parameter is always writ- ten into the product, regardless of the quality of the values retrieved. Today, the definition of the PCDs is too severe for the PCD of the surface reflectances, so that too many pixels are flagged as not good even though they can be useful.
