The gammma-spectrometer for the determination of the Martian rock composition from the Phobos spacecraft consists of a 100 x 100 mm CSI(Tl) single-crystal optically conjugated with the photomultiplier, a multichannel pulse-height analyzer, and a special electronics unit for the observation of solar flares and cosmic gamma-ray bursts. Ten background spectra on the mission route and 80 spectra over the Martian surface in some equatorial areas were measured using this instrument.
