The Mars Observer mission is planned for a September 1992 launch. The mission will provide a spacecraft platform about Mars from which the entire martian surface and atmosphere will be observed and mapped by remote sensing instruments. The scientific objectives for the mission emphasize qualitative and quantitative determination of the elemental and mineralogical composition of the surface, measurement of the global surface topography, gravity field and magnetic field.
