The Planetary Data System (PDS) requires that all science data to be included in its archive be accompanied by science metadata. Science metadata has been defined as the data about science data ``that encapsulates information such as: who did what and when, device characteristics, transform definition, documentation, citations, and structure''. ``It is imperative that the metadata remain attached to the data or the data become meaningless and unusable'' [French et al., 1990].
The Mars Digital Image Model (MDIM) Data Engineering Database (DEDB) is a proof-of-concept prototype developed to validate the use of database technology for managing science metadata. This prototype demonstrates the extended use of the PDS catalog for managing science metadata while it is being collected, validated, and formatted for use in labeling data products.
The concept of the Data Engineering Database (DEDB) focuses on the use of data semantics to drive the data engineering process, a model-driven reasoning process. Specifically, data hierarchy, data aggregation, and data relationships, together with the PDS catalog information, have been used as the base model of the science data management problem. This model is then used to support metadata design, which includes metadata verification and production of labels for data archive volumes. In the future, the DEDB concept could be useful in archive volume verification, archive volume design, data product production, and catalog development.
This paper will describe the Data Engineering Database concept, its prototype implementation, future directions and lessons learned.
