We present examples of scientific investigations that could be performed with a grating spectrometer on the International X-ray Observatory (IXO). The simulations are based on configurations using critical angle transmission (CAT) gratings, providing high spectral resolution and effective area. The simulations show that a CAT grating spectrometer can resolve most of the weakest lines in the X-ray spectra of active galaxies' warm absorbers and be used to determine which features match up with UV known absorption lines in order to improve models of this outflowing gas. Blends in the spectra of cool stars can be resolved, improving measurements of lines used as density and abundance diagnostics. Weak absorption features in the atmospheres of isolated neutron stars could be detected and measured as a function of rotation phase. With the substantial effective area of a CAT grating spectrometer on IXO, dozens of lines of sight toward high redshift quasars can be examined for evidence of ionized, intergalactic gas, probing the structure of the baryonic material in the Universe.
