Generation-X requires instrument capabilities significantly beyond those available today. Performance objectives include good detection efficiciency at energies as low as 100 eV, spectral resolving power of order thousands for both unresolved and resolved objects, field of view of at least 0.25x 0.25 deg and counting-rate capabilities at least several orders of magnitude higher, with specific background (per unit detector area) at least one order of magnitude lower compared to the capability of Chandra. A suite of instruments will almost certainly be required to meet these objectives. I discuss some of the technical challenges posed by these objectives, and plausible instrument technologies to meet them, inlcuding cryogenic- and objective-grating spectrometers, focal-plane spectrometers, and large-format, high-speed imagers.
